Mah Jongg for Three (2023)

A ten-minute klezmer opera for three high voices and piano. Mah Jongg for Three tells the story of three Jewish women who get together for a game of mah jongg. Esther is trying to keep her son’s sexuality ambiguous while her close friend Ashira tries to play matchmaker. Tamar, who doesn’t know either of them very well, is just there for the mah jongg but ends up surprising them both. This work was premiered on August 6, 2023 by Bethany Wright (Ashira), Gwyneth Fernandes (Tamar), and Brooke Beck (Esther), with the composer accompanying on piano.
